Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools assigns a home school by address, with boundaries reviewed periodically by the Board of Education. Many neighborhood families use the magnet lottery, which operates independently of address assignment and has winter application windows, or choose from the independent schools clustered around the city's eastern and southern sides.
