Origins and corridor
Briar Creek Greenway follows the creek that Mecklenburg County describes as flowing from east Charlotte toward Little Sugar Creek, and it is one of the tributary greenways feeding the county's trail network. The county's greenway listing documents a segment of 0.42 miles from Arnold Drive to Masonic Drive. A separate county project, Briar Creek Greenway from Central Avenue to Monroe Road, is described as adding about 1.6 miles of new greenway from the existing trail at Masonic Drive to Monroe Road. Dates and construction status change, so check the county's greenway projects page before assuming a gap has been closed. The corridor matters because greenways in Mecklenburg County serve several jobs at once. Park and Recreation says they provide recreation, transportation and fitness, and that the vegetated buffers improve water quality, reduce flood impacts and give wildlife habitat. Reaching it from Plaza Midwood
The trail lies to the southeast of the core neighborhood, near the Monroe Road and Independence Boulevard crossings, so it takes a deliberate trip rather than a stroll from Central Avenue. The county's Central to Monroe project, if complete when you read this, is meant to knit the existing Masonic Drive segment toward Monroe Road. Chantilly Ecological Sanctuary lies along the same creek and is the closest named destination on the corridor. From there, Briar Creek connects toward Little Sugar Creek Greenway, and Little Sugar Creek in turn links Freedom Park and Uptown. Before riding a long route, open the county greenway map and trace the connection, because a gap or an underpass closure can change a plan.
