About Chantilly Ecological Sanctuary
A quiet, unmanicured counterpoint to the maintained parks, with boardwalks and native planting. Birding here is better than its size suggests.
Why the sanctuary exists
Chantilly Ecological Sanctuary was made from a flood problem. In the 1960s the Doral and Cavalier apartment complexes were built beside Briar Creek between Independence Boulevard and Monroe Road. After repeated floods, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services bought the Cavalier property in 2008 and half of Doral in 2010 through its Floodplain Buyout Program, according to local reporting, and the buildings were gone by 2011. FEMA pre-disaster mitigation grants paid for most of the acquisitions. The cleared floodplain was then restored as a natural and beneficial floodplain: channels of Briar Creek, Edwards Branch and the Chantilly Tributary were rebuilt, and ponds and wetlands were added to remove stormwater pollution. The North Carolina Wildlife Federation describes the site as a 24-acre sanctuary and cites more than 160 documented bird species. Those figures are the federation's, and the Plaza Midwood directory entry for this park uses a smaller approximate acreage, so confirm with the county.
What you will find on the ground
Expect a restoration landscape rather than a manicured park. The wildlife federation lists native pollinator meadows, wetland plants such as blue-flag iris, pickerelweed and native hibiscus, and bird habitat along the creek. The neighboring Chantilly neighborhood park has a playground, and the blazeCLT guide notes the main entrance is at the end of a residential street with no dedicated parking lot, so visitors use roadside spaces. A greenway trail runs through the corridor, and an outdoor educational space serves Chantilly Montessori School and the community. Because the design is meant to hold floodwater, low areas can be wet or closed after storms, and boardwalk or trail surfaces may change as the county maintains them. Bring binoculars if you bird, keep to marked trails, and leave plant material in place. Current rules and any posted closures come from the county.

The sanctuary sits along Briar Creek southeast of the Plaza Midwood core, in the Chantilly area, so most residents treat it as a short bike ride or drive rather than a walk from Central Avenue. Its practical value is as the nature stop on the Briar Creek corridor: a quiet place to reach by greenway, then continue toward Little Sugar Creek Greenway and Freedom Park. The county's Briar Creek greenway project covers the gap between the Masonic Drive segment and Monroe Road, and its status determines whether the whole ride is continuous. Verify that on the county's greenway projects page. If you drive, look at the streets around the neighborhood park entrance and respect residential parking rules. Because the area is also an operating stormwater facility, follow posted guidance and do not enter fenced restoration areas.
